Laura Hilts

Laura taught English and Art in Ontario high schools for twenty- five years.  She attended the University of Windsor and after graduation taught in Toronto and in Deep River, Ontario.  From a very early age she enjoyed painting and drawing.  Her mother, who had  studied commercial art from schools in Chicago, Illinois in the  1930's, was an inspiration.

When Laura was in grade eight, she was one of two students chosen to take art lessons at the Wilistead Art Gallery in Windsor.  From this early encouragement, she found her passion for art.  She began oil painting at the University of  Windsor, and later took art courses at the Ottawa School of Art.  She studied watercolour painting with several renowned artists from  Canada and the United States.   Upon moving to Vancouver Island and  joining the Arrowsmith Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists,  she has been experimenting with acrylic and mixed-media painting.  he journey continues.

Laura was a member of the Ottawa Watercolour Society for over twenty years and was awarded by jury the status of Fellow of the  Watercolour Society in 2002.  Today she is an Active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists where her paintings have been juried  into many Federation shows both in Vancouver and in the Oceanside local Arrowsmith Chapter.  She has won both Awards of Excellence and Honourable Mention for several of her watercolours as well as acrylic  paintings in these Federation shows.
