Born in Vancouver BC in 1935, Sally studied at the School of Arts ( now Emily Carr) in her home town, and at the Dartington College of Art in Dartmouth England. She has done workshops in France, Mexico and Canada. She currently lives in Qualicum Beach, B.C. where she shows her work a the Old School House, and is an artist in residence at Qualicum House.
Despite her training, Sally considers herself to be a “self-developed” painter. In pursuing a desire to work with colour, she begins the process of creating her impressionistic, acrylic paintings with a large canvas and various globs of paint, laid out in the well-lit studio loft of her home. Although most of her paintings conjure up images of Oceanside and life by the sea, they are only inspired by the atmosphere , not drawn directly from it. Some of her pieces resemble collage, attributed to her use of pallet knife to build texture and create a sculpted look and feel to the flat canvas surface. Her work is comprised of soft blended colours, resembling water colour washes, but they contain accents and bolder areas where a riot of colour occurs.
Her paintings often look like landscapes, but those of heart and mind, not created by working on location. Walking through a room of her paintings is like discovering another worked of nature’s bliss. Her works hang in private collections in Canada as well as France, Mexico, Japan and England.
